Massive rural road uplift

A national road network project to develop 1500 rural roads coming under the Divisional Secretariats islandwide, is to be inaugurated on June 2, on the directions of the Premier and Highways Minister Mahinda Rajapakse the Prime Minister's media sources said.

The project also characterising the Premier's Maga Neguma program to develop rural roads is to be funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) under the SIRUP project, with an initial funding of Rs. 500 million set aside for the year 2005 already.

The program provides Rs. 20 lakhs to a Parliamentarian, Rs. 15 lakhs to a Provincial Council Member and Rs. 5 lakhs to a Divisional Secretariat Member annually.

Funds for the reconstruction of the roads are to be allocated in several stages, based on feasibility. Premier Mahinda Rajapaksa said that although these roads do not directly come under his purview, he was initiating the project based on UPFA government policy, of uplifting public transport and highways by reconstructing grades C and D rural roads.

The project is to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse at the Temple Trees at the auspicious time of 11.20 am, on June 2.

Colorful ceremonies to mark the national event will also be held simultaneously, at Salawa Road Ambuldeniya in Maharagama, Kalawewa D2 Canal Road in Kalawewa Anuradhapura, Demata Wewa Canal Road Damana in Amparai, Viharagala Mahapelassa Road Suriyawewa in Tissamaharama, Tithawelboda Road in Dambulla, Talagedara Wagolla Road in Yapahuwa, Dodangolla Temple Road in Moneragala and Morahela-Wadiyagoda Road in Balangoda, Ratnapura. The event is to be telecast live on Rupavahini.
