SLIA to introduce 'City Architect' concept

In a move to introduce the 'City Architect' concept in the country, the Sri Lanka Institute of Architects (SLIA) will appoint architects to work in Nuwara Eliya in collaboration with the Municipal Council to peruse building applications.

The 'City Architect' concept which is used in many other countries will be introduced to other Sri Lankan towns in the near future.

According to SLIA President Rukshan Widyalankara an awareness programme for the Building Inspectors would also be organised to coincide with the next regional event of SLIA to be held in Kandy in June this year. The proposed project is organised as a follow up programme to the architect exhibition organised by the SLIA in Nuwara Eliya in April. The exhibition attracted large crowds including members of the business community, Municipal Councillors, architects and other professionals.

Widyalankara said that the exhibition was organised to generate an awareness of architecture in Nuwara Eliya.

"Sadly, most of the structures constructed in and around Nuwara Eliya do not blend with the kind of architecture one would expect in Nuwara Eliya.

They are not in harmony with the topography and climate and as a result stand as an eye sore and blots in the landscape. This cannot continue, and as a responsible professional body we thought it is our duty to take action to prevent and to arrest this situation from further deterioration" he said.

According to him Mayor of Nuwara Eliya Monty Gopallawa has taken a keen interest on this matter and has invited the institute to collaborate with the Municipal Council to prepare a suitable action plan.

Mayor Gopallawa, whilst commending SLIA for taking this step, has reiterated the need to preserve the environment as a priority measure. He has identified the reason as being not obtaining the professional advice from qualified architects on building construction projects and the proliferation of non professionals such as Building Inspectors who sometimes draw plans to facilitate approvals.

This has resulted in a chaotic urban disorder, and Nuwara Eliya as an important hill station should regain its lost character.

He invited SLIA to carry out the awareness programme to the building inspectors of the three Municipalities under his provincial council; viz. Nuwara Eliya, Kandy, and Matale.
