Temporary housing units for tsunami victims Tsunami victims in all affected districts have been provided with 29,796 temporary housing units under the Transitional Accommodation Project (TAP) up to 25th May, according to TAP office at Jawatte road Colombo 5. At present 9273 houses are being constructed which is expected to be completed by the end of May. This will bring the total number of houses to nearly 40,000. The Commissioner General of Essential Services, Tilak Ranavirajah said that the number of houses would increase slightly in certain districts although a target of 33,000 houses were earmarked to be completed by the end of May this year. The temporary housing units have been constructed with assistance and support of local and international non-governmental organisations and UN agencies. Each house has a floor area of 200 sq ft. which afford better accommodation than in tents where affected families have been living since the disaster. The affected families are provided with temporary housing units until they are provided with permanent housing under a special program initiated by the TAFFREN. Mr. Ranavirajah said they were grateful to the non-governmental organisations including the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) and the International Organisation of Migrants (IOM) and other international organisations in many districts for their support and commitment in carrying forward the work. The other organisations which played lead roles in the districts were ZOA, GOAL, TZ Caritas and several other NGOs. (J.J.) |
