LT cases piling up

by Ananda Kannangara

The fifteen additional Labour Tribunals, set up by the Government sometime back to cope up with the increasing number of long standing labour cases has not shown progress, a recent Labour Ministry research revealed.

According to research more than 15,000 unresolved labour cases are still pending countrywide even after establishing additional tribunals.

It is reported that the majority of these cases have been pending since 2002. The country had about 21 Labour Tribunals during that period.

This situation influenced the Government to set up 15 additional Labour Tribunals with the objective of resolving this large number of cases in a stipulated period for the benefit of victimised persons.

The new Labour Tribunals were established with Cabinet approval under the Industrial Dispute Special Provisions Act.

In making a response to this statement Labour Relations and Foreign Employment Minister Athauda Seneviratna said that he had already discussed with relevant authorities on this long delay and confirmed that new suggestions, scheduled to be implemented soon will help both employees and employers as well.

Research indicates that 50 per cent of cases are over salary issues and others are with regard to dismissals and sudden closure of workplaces. Meanwhile a Senior Labour Department official said that at present there are 36 labour tribunals in the country including two at Ampara and Batticaloa.

"Since no Labour Tribunals are in the Jaffna district, all such cases are currently being heard at the Jaffna Magistrate's Court", he added.
