Rajan Kapugedera - only schoolboy in Sri Lanka 'A' team

By Upananda Jayasundera, Kandy Sports Special Corr.

Chamara Kapugedera who led Dharmaraja cricket team this year is the only schoolboy to be selected for the Sri Lanka 'A' cricket squad by the Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka.

He had a fine tour to Pakistan with the Sri Lanka Schools Cricket Team when he scored two centuries.

The first century was at Lahore where he scored 112 in the first Test against Pakistan Schools. Again he scored 131 in the 3rd limited-over match against them at the gaddafi stadium which helped Sri Lanka to win the game.

Chamara started his cricket career at Dharmaraja at the age of 10 years and has captained all different age group teams such as under 13, 15, 17 and 19. He has also captained the district school teams in these age groups as well. He has scored centuries in each age group from under 13 onwards in various tournaments conducted by Sri Lanka Schools Cricket Association.

In the year 2003, when Dharmaraja College cricket team became Lemonade Trophy Champions, Chamara was selected the Best Batsman.

The year 2004, was a special year for Chamara who became the only cricketer from Kandy schools to score 1000 runs. Darmaraja College has produced many cricketers to the Sri Lanka school side. Among them are T.B. Talwatte, Arthur Alwis, S.B. Situnayake, Chandra de Silva, Raja Mettananda, D.D.P. Alwis, Sarath Randeniya, G.S Ratnayake, Ananda Jayasundera, Harold Ranasinghe, Ravi Rajapakshe, Senaka Dissanayake and Pubudu Seneviratne to name a few.

They have also produced Sri Lanka(then Ceylon) cricketers like Sonny Yatawara and T.B. Kehelgamuwa but yet to produce a Test cricketer and if Chamara is guided properly and given a fair chance, he is bound to be a good candidate.
