Nature Cup basketball and badminton June 4

The Fourth Nature Cup Invitation Basketball and Badminton Championships sponsored and conducted by David Pieris Motor Company will take place on June 4 at their Sport Complex in Madapatha, Piliyandala.

The tournament is conducted as usual on a 'team' championship basis in two groups once the league stage is completed, the two top teams of each group will play in a criss-cross semi-final.

In a press briefing held at the Mercantile Cricket Association Board Room regarding the tournament, Neil Perera the Executive Director of DPMC and the Chairman Of the Tournament Committee said that there were two reasons for sponsoring the tournament one was because they loved sports and the second was to promote basketball and badminton. They have sponsored Mercantile cricket tournaments.

Nine (men) and six (women) teams have entered the basketball tournament. In the men's teams tournament: DPMC, HSBC, Seylan Bank, Dialog GSM, D.S.Senanayake College, Sri Lankan AirLines, Army Military Police, Gold BC, Mobitel. The women's teams are: DPMC, HSBC, Good Shepherd Convent, Kotahena, Otters AC, HNB, Seylan Bank.

Teams for the badminton tournament: DPMC, Douglas & Sons, Mobitel, SL Air Force, Ceylinco Group, HSBC.

Seven events, a 'tie' consisting two men's singles, two men's doubles, one women's single, one women doubles and a mix double will be conducted in the badminton tournament.

All matches will be played during the weekends, Mercantile holidays. The men's basketball tournament will get underway on June 4th and 5th while the women cagers will display their skills on June 18th. The date for the finals will be notified in due course. The men's and women's basketball finals have been scheduled at the Depot Police courts under lights. The winners and runners-up of both events will receive cash prizes and trophies.
