President gives assurance to consult Maha Sangha :

Fast unto death ends

by L.B. Wijayasiri in Kandy

Jathika Hela Urumaya MP Ven. Dr. Omalpe Sobhitha Thera who was fasting unto death at the Mahamaluwa opposite the Dalada Maligawa, Kandy against the setting up of the proposed Post Tsunami Operational Management Structure (PTOMS) in the North and East terminated the fast yesterday morning.

Most Ven. Weweldeniye Medananda Mahanayake Thera of Sri Lanka Ramanna Nikaya and Ven. Dawuldena Gnanissara Mahanayake Thera of Amarapura Nikaya visited the scene of the fast and handed over two separate letters requesting him to terminate the fast, on the grounds that President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga had given an assurance to the Maha Sangha that the common machinery would not be signed without consulting them.

The Mahanayake Theras told the fasting monk that there was no need to continue the fast since so far no steps had been taken to sign the common machinery by the President.

The fasting monk Omalpe Sobhitha agreed to the request and the Mahanayake Theras handed over to him a tray of jasmine flowers to be offered to the Sacred Tooth Relic to mark the ending of the fast. Accordingly the fast-unto-death was terminated by the monk and the National Flag which was at half mast at the Mahamaluwa was hoisted in full and the National Anthem was sung.

This ending of the fast was a result of untiring efforts made by Most Ven. Mahanayake Theras headed by Most Ven. Thibbotuwawe Sri Siddhartha Sumangala Mahanayake Thera of Malwatte and Udugama Sri Ratanapala Buddharakkhitha Mahanayake Thera of Asgiriya Chapter. Ven. Dr. Omalpe Sobhitha Thera was taken for a medical check-up on termination of his fast.
