Salinity dam to ease water shortage in Galle by Anura Maitipe The first stage of the Galle Water Supply Project at a cost of Rs 4250million has been completed. The supply line would provide drinking water to 4000 families in the suburbs of Galle town, the Deputy General Manager of the Water Supply Board K.R Devasurendra told the Sunday Observer. He said, the existing water tank with a capacity of 32000 cubic metres per day at Hapugala is not sufficient to meet the current demand. The tank cannot be operated during the dry season, due to infiltration of sea water into Gin-Ganga which is the main source. During the past one and half decades infiltration of sea water had caused severe shortage of drinking water in Galle town and the suburbs. But with the construction of salinity dam under the proposed project that infiltration of sea water will be completely prevented,he added. The newly installed plant could supply water to people in Ratgama, Dadalla, Boossa, Gintota, Akmeemana, Unawatuna, Koggala and Habaraduwa and would also enhance the delivery capacity of the existing tank during the dry season by ensuring an uninterrupted water supply to the Galle town and suburbs. |
