Teaching appointments for graduates on July 01 by Ananda Kannangara A record number of 15,000 graduates, registered with the Government's Graduates Job Providing Scheme (GGJPS) last year, will get teaching appointments in provincial schools with effect from July 01. The Education Department on Friday revealed that the special interviews, being conducted by the Department for graduate teachers would be finalised by June 20. The recruitment drive will be carried out by the Department of Management Services of the Ministry of Finance through the Public Service Commission. In an interview with the Sunday Observer, Deputy Finance Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya said that another batch of 5,000 graduates would be appointed as development assistants, planning assistants and financial assistants in provincial education offices and also in training colleges countrywide. "Since there is a severe shortage of teachers in the North and East a large percentage of graduates who completed their studies in the Tamil medium will be absorbed to the schools there," he said. The Minister also said that Tamil graduates, who excelled in the Sinhala Language would also be given appointments at schools in the North and East to enable them to teach Sinhala Language. He also assured that teachers, appointed under this scheme would also be given a special training at teacher training colleges after one year of their permanent appointments. Although the graduate trainees received Rs. 6000 during their training, they will kept a higher salary after they assume permanent jobs. Referring to some recent remarks made in respect of the proposed graduates job scheme, the Deputy Minister insisted the Government's firm stand on permanent jobs for all 42,036 registered graduates. It is said that some graduates who were already in employment and receiving higher salaries also applied for jobs under the GGJPS in response to the Government's request, considering the pension and other benefits, granted by the Government for public servants. |
