Fragile structures prone to disasters by Don Asoka Wijewardena In case an earthquake in the magnitude of 6 to 7 in Richter Scale occurs in Sri Lanka, the damage caused to buildings in economic terms would be very much higher than that which was caused by the recent tsunami. The Condominium Management Authority (CMA) has encountered an enormous problem in relocating occupants and owners of dilapidated state-owned condominiums for restoration work as some are found to be on the verge of collapse. CMA General Manager Athula Wimalaratne told the Sunday Observer that state-implemented condominiums identified as Soysa Mahal in Slave Island,Kettarama flats near Sugathadasa Stadium, seven housing blocks in Maligawatta Housing Scheme, Wekanda Housing Scheme near Union Place and some housing blocks at Dias Place in Gunasinghapura were in need of urgent restoration and added that in case natural calamities like cyclones, earthquakes or even tremors occur in the Colombo city these condominiums would collapse causing a major disaster. Wimalaratne also noted that the CMA was seeking permission of the relevant authorities to facilitate both local and foreign developers as well as investors to construct transit houses on unutilised CGR property until required restoration work and repairs of the dilapidated condominiums were completed. He also said the CMA was in the process of informing developers and investors to construct houses, commercial buildings and condominiums with additional reinforcements and additional members to ensure that all condominiums would be earthquake-resistant. |
