Commence power projects soon - TUs Collective of the Ceylon Electricity Board Trade Unions (CEBTU) has urged the Government to commence the construction of the proposed hydro and coal power projects immediately to solve the increasing energy crisis in the country. CEBTU convenor Ananda Nimalaratne, in a press release emphasised the danger of delaying these projects in the face of daily increase of oil prices in the world market. The convenor also stressed that the Treasury should fund the CEB to buy thermal power from the private sector until CEB meets its demand by power generated through these mega projects. He said that CEB's daily loss is over Rs. 50 million after the recent oil price hike and the Unions are against any increase in electricity tariff at this moment merely to buy power from thermal power generation companies. The convenor stated that the unions would not hesitate to take trade union action if the Government would not take immediate measures to implement these programs and save CEB from disruptive forces including those with privatising and restructuring agendas. Currently, 65 percent of CEB power generation comes from thermal power and CEB has spent over Rs. 36,000 million to buy electricity on an urgent basis. Those who take decisions continue to promote thermal power thereby pushing CEB into further bankruptcy, he stated. CEB's current debt has increased to Rs. 90 billion. |
