Young representatives to GYLC

Four outstanding young students from Sri Lanka have been selected to follow an unique leadership development programme called Global Young Leaders Conference (GYLC) in Washington DC and New York City.

The four students will not go together and Shamraz Anver will be the first to go with his course from July 3 to July 14, then Miss Mariza Cooray's course will be from July 17 to July 28, while Ruvindu Guneratne and Hareen Kaththotage course will be from July 24 to August 4. This is a unique Global Young Leaders conference which is a development program that brings together outstanding people from around the world to build critical leadership skills in a global context.

The theme of Global Young Leaders Conference is "The leaders of tomorrow preparing for Global Challenges and Responsibilities of the Future".

The students participating in the conference will interact with key leaders and newspapers with powerful influence over politics, finance, culture and diplomacy, and will take part in a careful designed curriculum, which includes thought-provoking ideas that build leadership skills.

Last year, three Sri Lankan students participated in the Global Young Leaders Conference. The four Sri Lankan students have been selected among 400 outstanding scholars from across the globe to attend the conference. Two of the students - Shamraz Anver and Ruvindu Guneratne have received full scholarships to participate in the conference.

The participants meet the highest criteria in academics and leadership and it is a requirement that applicants obtain a minimum of 3.5 Grade Point Average on a 4.0 scale to receive invitations to attend the Global Young Leaders Conference.

GYLC is a non-profit, non-partisan educational organisation. Founded in 1985, the Council is committed to fostering and inspiring young people to achieve their full leadership potential. To date, more than 200,000 young people have taken part in the council's programmes.

The Global Young Leaders Conference culminates with the Global Summit, in which students apply what they've learned throughout the Conference as the debate, negotiate and build coalitions dealing with issues, such as foreign aid, global warming, co-operative efforts in space, terrorism and human rights.

Past highlights of the programme include welcoming remarks from a variety of young leaders who make and leave their mark on the international community, a briefing at the U.S. Department of State, an address at the United Nations and site visits at financial institutions on Wall Street, among several other events.
