Help bring about SLFP-UNP accord - TNA MPs to India FM

by Ananth Palakidnar

The Tamil National Alliance parliamentarians have urged the visiting Indian Foreign Minister Natwar Singh to prevail on the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) and the United National Party (UNP) to take a constructive common stance towards the Post-Tsunami Operational Management Structure (P-TOMS).

A six member delegation of the TNA comprising Parliamentarians R. Sampanthan, Joseph Pararajasingam, Mavai Senathiraja, Suresh Premachandran, K. Sivajilingam, and Gagendrakumar Ponnambalam met the Indian Foreign Minister at Taj hotel on Friday.

TNA Parliamentarian Suresh Premachandran told the Sunday Observer that the delegation had briefed Mr. Natwar Singh in detail on the past events which led to the collapse of several treaties worked out to settle the ethnic crisis in Sri Lanka. The TNA had also told the Indian foreign Minister that it had been the nature of the main political parties in Sri Lanka to look into narrow political gains whenever constructive measures were taken to settle the disputes.

"The TNA has urged Mr. Natwar Singh to make the leaders of the ruling SLFP and the Opposition UNP to work together with regard to the P-TOMS issue in order to make it a success.

The TNA also pointed out that the Joint Mechanism remained a good opportunity to resume the stalled peace process and to look forward towards settling the ethnic crisis," Mr. Premachandran said.

Responding to the TNA members of Parliament Mr. Natwar Singh reiterated India's support to P-TOMS and said that India was very particular that the stalled peace process should resume as early as possible and a permanent solution should be found within the territorial integrity of Sri Lanka.

Mr. Natwar Singh was accompanied by the Indian Envoy to Sri Lanka Ms Nirupama Rao and Indian Foreign Secretary Shyam Saran at his meeting with the TNA delegation.
