SME Bank to enhance skills of local inventors

by Hiran H. Senewiratne

The government is planning to provide loans for local inventors and designers from the newly established SME Bank to enhance their skills in a productive way, Minister of Advanced Technology and National Enterprise Development Rohitha Bogollagama said.

"We have to appreciate and felicitate our young inventors and also use their inventions to increase productivity in the country," Minister Bogollagama told the awards ceremony organised by the Sri Lanka New Inventors Commission (SLNIC).

Fifteen young inventors were recognised at the International Exhibition for Young Inventors held in Japan and Malaysia in 2004 and 2005. He said that the government is hoping to get assistance from Technical Collages and Research Institutes to improve the capacity of new inventors and designers and to set up a market for them. He said the new inventions for the SME sector will help to improve productivity in the country.

SLNIC will take the initiative to promote these new inventions among the SME sector, Minister Bogollagama said.

The Minister said that they are in the process of facilitating new inventors to use advanced technology to enrich their creativity and knowledge.

He said that SLNIC will also be upgraded to use our local inventors and designers work, in a productive manner especially items which have commercial value.

The Minister also said that new invention circles would also be set up at district, regional and national level to improve the capacity of our upcoming inventors in the country.
