Miandad - the star

by A.C. De Silva

April 19 1966, produced one of the most thrilling finishes to a one-day cricket match and with it the ultimate winners - Pakistan pocketed 15,000 dollars. Chetan Sharma represented India's challenge while Pakistan's symbol of hope was Javed Miandad and the excitement reached fever-pitch. the fact that it was played at Sharjah, gave further colour. It is a well-known fact that any contest involving India and Pakistan, is a ready hit any day any time in Sharjah.

Chetan Sharma, was to bowl the last ball, with Pakistan needing four runs for a victory. There were discussions, consultations and more discussions and more consultations before Sharma bowled that last ball.

It was a full toss, and Miandad, by now seeing the cricket ball like a foodball, lashed it over the midwicket fence for a six.

This was one of the finest wins for Pakistan in one-day cricket history and Miandad's century was surely one of the best knocks in the history of instant cricket. Miandad hit 116 not out in 112 balls with, three sixes and three fours.

Came Pakistan's turn in batting and from the last five overs, Pakistan's requirement was 51 runs. Fourteen runs came from the 46th over bowled by Madan Lal with Miandad livening things up with a six. Kapil Dev gave away only six runs in the 47th over. Pakistan needed 31 runs from three overs. In the next over from Sharma, Miandad reached his century - that was the 48th over. Kapil Dev was hit for seven runs in the penultimate over.

The last over came and there was tremendous excitement with 11 runs required by Pakistan. Wasim Akram was run out, off the first ball.

Miandad, having changed ends, swung the second ball for a 4 between long-on and mid-wicket. Off the third ball, he picked up a single, giving strike to newcomer Zulquarnain, but Zulqarnain fell to his first ball - the fourth in the over.

Tauseef got a single off the fifth ball, the most sensible thing to do at that stage to give Miandad the strike.

The last ball from Chetan Sharma remained to be bowled and Pakistan needed four runs.

Then came that full toss from Sharma. Miandad whacked it over midwicket. Pakistan had done it.

But cricket it was that was the ultimate winner.
