by Jayampathy Jayasinghe There are fears that forged notes are in circulation again following the arrest of two persons in Grandpass area with a large amount of forged currency notes in their possession last week. The detection was made by Inspector Prasanna de Alwis of the Colombo Special Investigation Unit which functions under Senior DIG Range 1, Sirisena Herath and DIG Colombo, Pujitha Jayasundera. On a tip off, officers of the Colombo Special Unit raided a house at Madampitiya junction in Grandpass area and arrested a man in the possession of 1400 forged currency notes in the denominations of Rs 100 and one Rs. 500 note. A week later the same police party raided another house in Grandpass area and arrested another man with 5000 forged notes. There were three Rs. 500 notes and thirty five Rs. 100 notes in his possession. The suspects while being questioned had revealed that they had purchased a sophisticated printing machine from Dubai for the purpose. According to Inspector De Alwis, the suspects are said to have printed a large quantity of fake notes during the past few months. "We suspect the fake notes to have entered circulation by now. It is difficult to distinguish these notes from genuine ones," Inspector De Alwis said. It was learnt that the inquiry will be handed over to the CID, Forged Currency Bureau. Meanwhile both suspects were produced before courts and remanded till investigations were over. Those who participated in the detection were SI Herath, PSS, Alwis,
Sisira, Fernando, and PCC. Wasantha, Kalubovila, and Wijeratne under the
supervision of ASP Bandula Wijeratne. |
