Favouritism, bias spoil Journalism Awards The annual Editors Guild Award ceremony held recently has caused much dissatisfaction among journalists due to its alleged bias in some judgements. Many journalists have strongly criticised the way of selections for awards pointing to the fact that several unworthy awards have been made obviously for some other reasons. The selection of the Best Journalist and Columnist of the year has become controversial as submission of two veteran journalists, Poddala Jayantha of "Silumina" and Thimbiriyagama Bandara of "Ravaya" have not been considered at all by the judges. In the case of the journalist Poddala Jayantha it is alleged that the organizers had not even submitted his collection of articles to the judges out of fear that definitely he would be awarded if the selection committee had the chance of reading them. As Poddala's writings were secretly thrown into the dustbin by the organizers the Best Journalist Award went to a female journalist allegedly for loyalty shown in her scribblings which is not investigative journalism in the real sense of the concept. Several judges have said that they had not even seen Poddala's writings among the submissions and some hidden hand had worked in order to hide his collection of articles. Also the same invisible hand had hidden Thimbiriyagama's collection of articles they said. The award for the Year's Best Designed Newspaper was arbitrarily given to the Irudina the Sinhala version of Sunday Leader sabotaging the most deserved award which should have obviously gone to the Hiru in the opinion of the judges. |
