Graduates want permanent jobs

by Ananda Kannangara

A large number of graduates, registered with the Combined Unemployed Graduates' Association (CUGA) are demanding the Government to provide them with permanent jobs at public sector institutions immediately.

In an interview with the Sunday Observer CUGA, Convener Chandana Sooriyaarachchi said that if the Government does not make an announcement in respect of their appointments within the next few weeks, they would be compelled to organise protests, demanding the Government to fulfil the pledges.

He said around 42,000 graduates were registered with the Graduates Employment Program, initiated by the Government on the directive of President Chandrika Bandarnaike Kumaratunga last year and only a small number of them obtained fixed employment at public institutions so far.

"According to our research less than 1,000 graduates have so far been absorbed into Government institutions such as the BOI, the Department for Registration of Persons, Samurdi Ministry, Finance Ministry and the Education Ministry," he said.

Meanwhile a senior official attached to the Management Service Department (MSD) of the Ministry of Finance denied some statements made by the Convener of CUGA and said that a large number of graduates have already been given permanent jobs.

"We have instructed secretaries of all Ministries to fill the available vacancies with suitable graduates by June 30, after calling interviews through newspaper advertisements," he said.

"The interviews, conducted by some institutions are still going on and stressed that all registered graduates under this scheme will be definitely provided with permanent jobs within a stipulated period," he said.

When contacted Deputy Finance Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya told the Sunday Observer that all graduates were given training in respective fields such as technology, computer, teaching, clerical and they would be given permanent jobs in a proper way through the Public Service Commission.

The Deputy Minister also insisted the Government's firm stand on permanent jobs for all registered 42,000 graduates in public sector institutions.

It is reported that all graduates, registered with the program are entitled to Rs. 6,000 each per month during their nine month training period and thereafter will continue it until they are absorbed into permanent jobs on different salary scales.
