New Diyawadana Nilame : Five in the contest by S. Anandakumar The election of the chief custodian, the Diyawadana Nilame of the Dalada Maligawa, Kandy will be held on Friday, July 1, at the Senkadagala Buddhist Centre. The contest under the Buddhist Temporalities Act of 1931 will be conducted by the Commissioner of Buddhist Affairs, in which Sinhala Buddhists below the age of 70 are eligible to contest. A total of five are in the fray for the most prestigious and privileged post with former Diyawadana Nilame Neranjan Wijeyeratne contesting for a third term. He, the Basnayake Nilame of the Vishnu Devale is challenged by the Basnayake Nilame of the Sri Saman Devale and the Kataragama Devale Mohan Panabokke, Basnayake Nilame of the Embekke Devale, Sudantha Senanayake, T. Keerawella, an engineer by profession and former Regional Manager, Bank of Ceylon, P.B. Jayasundera. Three hundred and ninety six (396) are in the electoral college, including the prelates of the Malwatte and Asgiriya chapters, Anunayakes, chief incumbents of certain temples and district secretaries. The first Diyawadana Nilame was Kapuwatte Adikaram 1814-24 and the Nilames who had held the post for 20 years and over, were by Punchi Banda Nugawela - 21 years (1916-37), Neranjan Wijeyeratne - 20 years (1985-2005) and Cuda Banda Dunuwila - 20 years (1862-82).
