BIA security beefed up by Jayampathy Jayasinghe A proposal has been made to intensify surveillance and strict security checks at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) as well as in the coastal region to prevent smuggling of drugs to the country. The Secretary to the Public Security, Law and Order Ministry, Tilak Ranaviraja disclosed that stricter checks will be made at the BIA by deploying sniffer dogs and also by formation of a Coast Guard Unit to patrol coastal areas from where drugs are said to be smuggled into the country. The Secretary said that 10 patrol boats will be imported for this purpose as an immediate measure until the Coast Guard unit is established. At present the Navy is engaged in patrolling the seas for anti drug operations. Meanwhile the Drug prevention week will commence from June 26 - July 2, to coincide with the International anti-drugs day which falls on June 26. The Ministry of Public Security, Law and Order has drawn up a comprehensive program during this week to tackle the drug problem, through educational programs and strict law enforcement to prevent smuggling of drugs. During the drug week, the Police, Customs, Excise, Education , Health departments and the National Dangerous Drugs Control Board will conduct special campaigns to educate school children, youths and the civil society regarding the danger of drug abuse.
