Local contraption to supply potable water by Don Asoka Wijewardena In a bid to supply safe drinking water a "Surface Water Purification Plant" which can produce around 500 cubic meters of water per day was commissioned by Urban Development and Water Supply Minister Dinesh Gunawardena in Pugoda recently. Minister Gunawardena pointed out that the plant capable of treating river water to potable water of quality standard has a capacity of providing drinking water to about 800 to 1000 families per day. The National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB) conceptualised and developed the locally made movable type of surface water treatment plants which were on par with world standard plants used in disaster situations such as tsunami and earthquakes. NWSDB Vice Chairman Harsha Suriyaarachchi said the water plant had become a successful reality as a result of indefatigable efforts of his team of competent engineers and added that the project would be helpful in accelerating and achieving the target of providing safe drinking water to the people by year 2025. Referring to the technical aspects of the project, Suriyaarachchi disclosed that the plant could purify 500 cubic meters of high turbid river water for a day conforming to Sri Lanka standards and meeting other international water quality standards. He also said that the treatment system consisted of an aerator, chemical mixer, flocculator, tube settler, rapid sand filter and activated carbon filter. |
