Sri Lankan wins Women in Cancer Research Award Dr. Kumari Andarawewa is one of the recipients of "2005 - American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) - Women in Cancer Research Brigid G. Leventhal Scholar Award in Cancer Research", in recognition of an outstanding research paper, where she contributes towards developing a tumour model which recapitulates natural cancer history and mimics human carcinogenesis. She is the first Sri Lankan to receive this award. After obtaining her BVSc from University of Peradeniya, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and a MSc from International Space University, France, Dr. Andarawewa obtained her PHD in 2004 in Molecular Biology from University Louise Pasteur, France. She has done extensive research on cancer cell/stromal interactions in breast cancer and also on inhibitors against cancer. She is the first Sri Lankan woman to obtain the Masters in Space Science. She is the daughter of D.B. Andarawewa, Director of Ceylinco Educational Services and C. Andarawewa of Holy Family Convent, Bambalapitiya. She is married to Dr. Rohan Rajapakse, who is also a researcher, at University of California, San Francisco. |
