Concerned Ministers hope to renegotiate with JVP
by Jayantha Sri Nissanka Several Ministers are lobbying to regain the UPFA Government's majority in Parliament by renegotiating with the JVP to overcome ideological differences. "Even the JVP has understood that disunity among coalition parties should not be an opportunity for other parties to grab power", they said. When inquired about the JVP response for talks a Minister said that the JVP had not totally rejected the idea. Even the previous night before they left a senior JVP member spoke to me and he was worried but never hinted that JVP would totally reject renegotiations with the SLFP, he confided. However, the Ministers are awaiting the return of fellow Cabinet members Mangala Samaraweera and Anura Bandaranaike from China to start negotiations. When asked as to when the negotiations would begin, a Minister said that it would be after the Poson Poya on June 21. They are planning to take up this issue at the next UPFA Executive Committee meeting as well as at the UPFA party leaders' meeting, a Minister said.
