Milinda in high-level commission Former Minister of Economic Reform, Science and Technology Milinda Moragoda has been appointed a member to a High Level Commission on Legal Empowerment of the Poor by the Norwegian Prime Minister Kjell Magne Bondevik. Announcing the appointment to Milinda Moragoda the Norwegian Premier has stated that it was high time that the International community developed an action-oriented agenda to secure the legal empowerment of the poor.Norway together with other interested parties was ready to launch a High-Level Commission for this purpose. First and foremost, the new Commission will be charged with developing an action oriented agenda that includes key principles and a tool kit of policy and strategy options, thus providing governments and organisations with the means to move forward.The duration of the Commission's mandate will be two and a half years. The UN Secretary General has welcomed the initiative as a substantial contribution to reaching the Millennium Development Goals. The launching of the Commission is planned to take place back-to-back with the High-level summit meeting in New York in September 2005, and its first regular meeting is planned for November 2005. Twenty two other eminent members from all continents have been appointed as members to the Commission. (A.P.)
