No fear, Govt continues - DM by Anura Maitipe Although the government has lost its majority in the House,it would not collapse and it would move forward to fulfil the election promises made to the public, P.A. Secretary and Posts & Telecommunications Minister D. M. Jayaratna told the Sunday Observer. However, the UNP had interpreted the withdrawal of the JVP from the UPFA government as a divorce. The UNP logic is wrong. This is not a divorce. In fact this is a separation. When a couple separates then they could re-join at any time, because there is no legal-implication for them to re-rejoin,he pointed out. The UNP's latest myth on this issue is totally unacceptable. The UNP urged the government not to present this document to Parliament and asked the President to sign it as was done by former President J.R Jayawardene and former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe. Is this the democracy that the UNP preaches. Once PTOMS regulation is tabled in Parliament the UNP has to commit itself with either an yes or no. Sometimes the UNP will abstain from voting on this issue. Even abstaining would be considered by Tamil and Muslim community as a 'No vote' for this agreement. Whether we like it or not the reality is that the government is not in a position to carry out re-construction work in uncleared areas without the help of the LTTE. This is an ideal opportunity to get closer to the isolated Tamil community in the LTTE controlled tsunami affected areas and to build a friendship bridge between the Tamils, Muslims and Sinhalese, he expressed. The Post-Tsunami Operational Management Structure (PTOMS) is not so dark as described by certain people and it is a mere document of understanding to work together for a period of one year to rebuild the tsunami affected areas in the north and east.If it is so harmful the EPDP leader Douglas Davananda would not have given his consent for the proposed rehabilitation process, he asked. The LTTE made two attempts on his life and he had narrow escapes. The LTTE and the EPDP are arch rivals. But he knows that there is no legal binding in this agreement and it would not leave any room for the LTTE to dominate other political parties in the north and east, he pointed out.
