NLF praises President's firmness with P-TOMS by Deepal Warnakulasuriya President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga's sound decision to go ahead with the proposed Joint Mechanism was a victory of the working class which clamoured for it and a defeat of certain groups of people who were agitating on communal lines, New Left Front (NLF) Leader Wickramabahu Karunaratne told the Sunday Observer. He said that the President's move should be appreciated as the people who were affected by the tidal waves looked for, to a helping hand to overcome the disaster they faced. The proposed mechanism being only for a period of one year and for an area of less than two kilometres, no acceptable reason can be adduced to oppose the proposal by anyone. However, Karunaratne was also against presenting the document in Parliament and said that the President should have called for an all party conference. Meanwhile, the NLF General Secretary Leenus Jayathillake at a press briefing on Thursday urged the President to bring and activate the proposed mechanism to heal the woes of thousands of innocent people who were affected by the tsunami and to rehabilitate and develop the affected areas immediately.
