LTTE for early P-TOMS

by Ananth Palakidnar

The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam is expecting the Post Tsunami Operational Management Structure (P-TOMS) to be signed as early as possible without further dilly-dallying according to LTTE spokesperson Daya Master.

Commenting on the current political situation with regard to the P-TOMS in the south Daya Master told the Sunday Observer that reaching agreement on the P-TOMS has been already delayed by the political turmoil in the South.

"We believe that the path is now clear for the Government of President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga to make the P-TOMS a reality. The majority of political parties in Parliament have taken a positive stance towards the P-TOMS. So tabling the P-TOMS in Parliament would lead to further misunderstandings and a chaotic situation in the country," Daya Master said.

He also said that the LTTE considered the P-TOMS as entirely a non-political and humanitarian arrangement and there would not be any delay on its part in accepting it.

During the meeting with the Norwegian facilitator Vidar Helgessen this week S.P. Thamilselvan would detail the LTTE's next move on the P-TOMS issue", Daya Master added. Meanwhile, Tamil National Alliance parliamentarian Joseph Pararajasingam told the Sunday Observer, that the P-TOMS was also another agreement like the Ceasefire Agreement which was signed three years ago and holds satisfactorily.

Therefore the P-TOMS should also be signed without taking it to Parliament. "The JVP remained a stumbling block to the P-TOMS. President Kumaratunga who is determined to go ahead with the P-TOMS has had enough opposition from the JVP and the JHU. So it was meaningless making an issue out of the P-TOMS by taking it to Parliament," Pararajasingam added.
