Ladies in hard fought one-nil victory
by Leslie Fernando
A superb goal in the 14th minute of the first-half by right-extreme
Nishika Fonseka helped Ladies to register a hard fought 1-nil win over
Bishop's in their annual under-19 hockey encounter played at the Astro turf,
Reid Avenue yesterday.
This match was played after a lapse of ten years and this year's match
was sponsored by Janashakthi Insurance.
Both sides started off confidently but the Ladies stickers showed better
team work and played a methodical game. Ladies with its forwards playing
with a lot of vigour succeeded to gain the lead. They opened their account
in the 14th minute when left-inside Isuru Benaragama beat the Bishop's
defender Vidushie Samson and passed the ball perfectly to Nishika Fonseka
who in turn collected it neatly and sounded the board with a hit to the
right corner of the goal.
Bishop's after conceding the first goal played fast attacking hockey in a
bid to equalise but the strong defence of the Ladies foiled it. At half-time
the Ladies led 1-nil.
After the interval, the defence of both teams came under intense
pressure. Both Ladies and Bishop's strikers combined well but their forwards
failed miserably.
However, in the 31st minute, Ladies' skipper Saakidhya Manohara dribbled
past two defenders in the midfield but failed to score when her hit was well
saved by Bishop's goalkeeper Apsara Gunathileka with uncanny anticipation. |
