U-17 girls squash gold for Nirosha by Lal Gunesekera Fifteen-year-old Nirasha Guruge, the reigning national women's open champion and junior national champion of Holy Family Convent, Bambalapitiya created a major upset when she beat Malaysia's No. 1 Pushpa Dewi in a three-setter (9-5, 9-3, 9-1) to win the girl's under-17 title and with it the gold medal at the Singapore Junior Squash Championship last week. Earlier in the semi-finals, Nirasha beat Singapore's junior national champion Pamela Chua, also in straight sets (9-0, 9-5, 9-6) in a gruelling match lasting over 50 minutes. Binura Jayasuriya clinched the silver medal in the boys under-13 category losing the final to Malaysia's No. 1 Elroy Yung after beating Singapore's No. Brian Koh earlier. Nilruk Soysa and Shiran Rodrigo (boys under-17), Praveen Perera and Kasum Weerasuriya (boys under-15) entered the quarter-finals in their respective age groups. Weerasuriya lost his "quarter" in a five-setter and had match point at 8-5 in the final set, but his inexperience and temperament could not pull it off.
