Chandrika wins triple crown in Nepal A former national women's champion and Uber Cup player, Chandrika de Silva, won the coverted triple crown at the Nepal Satellite conducted by the Nepal Badminton Association (NBA) at Kathmandu last week. Players from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Nepal competed for honours. Chandrika fared well to defeat her country's own reigning national champion Thilini Jayasinghe in straight sets (11-5, 11-9) to win the Women's Singles title, then both combined effectively to beat Nepal's pair of Sumina Shrestha and Pooja Shresthra in a three-setter (15-6, 13-15, 15-6) to win the Women's Doubles title. Chandrika won the Mixed Doubles title with Thushara Edirisinghe when they beat another Sri Lanka pair of Duminda Jayakody and Thilini Jayasinghe in straight sets (15-3, 15-4). Pakistan's Ashsan Qamar won the Men's Singles title defeating Sri Lanka's Thushara Edirisinghe in a three-setter (1-15, 15-11, 15-0), with the Sri Lankan beating Wajid Ali (17-15, 10-15, 17-15) in the semi-finals. Ali had beaten Sri Lanka's reigning national champion Niluka Karunaratne at the South Asian Games in Pakistan. Another Pakistani combination of Ahmed Wagars and Tahir Ishaq won the Men's Doubles title beating Sri Lanka's pair of Jayakody and Edirisinghe in straight sets (15-6, 15-1). (L.G.) |
