Mushtaq Ali dies aged 90
NEW DELHI, June 18 (AFP) - Indian cricket star of the 1930s and 40s, Syed Mushtaq Ali, died at his home in the central city of Indore, his family announced on Saturday. Mushtaq, 90, played 11 Tests from 1934 to 1952 scoring 612 runs with two centuries. The dashing batsman outpaced opening partner Vijay Merchant to become the first Indian to score a Test century abroad as the duo added 203 runs against England at Old Trafford in 1936. Mushtaq slammed 112 and Merchant 114 as India salvaged a memorable draw despite conceding a huge 368-run first innings lead in the match. Mushtaq played for 24 years in first-class cricket scoring over 13,000 runs with 30 centuries and also bagged 155 wickets with his left-arm spin bowling. His son Syed Gulrez Ali and grandson Syed Abbas Ali have also played first-class cricket.
