Vietnam PM embarks on historic US trip HANOI, Saturday (AFP) Prime Minister Phan Van Khai was heading this weekend for a crucial trip to the United States where he is expected to seek closer all-round ties with his country's former enemy, but will face demands for progress on human rights. Khai was to leave in the early hours of Sunday to meet President George W. Bush at the White House on Tuesday, becoming the first Vietnamese head of government to do so since the Vietnam War ended in 1975. Only a decade ago, prior to establishing diplomatic relations in July 1995, the two sides were barely on speaking terms. The trip marks 10 years of growing ties between the two sides eager to bury the legacy of the war and seek closer economic, political and even military cooperation. "A decade is only a short time, but during this passage of time, the two countries' relationship has improved and developed remarkably," Deputy Prime Minister Vu Khoan was quoted as saying in the official media. "The two countries have recently been discussing measures to take the relationship to a new height, towards stable and long-term cooperation," Khoan was reported to have told the Vietnam Investment Review. |
