New books on Journalism

by Dr. Chandrasiri Rajapaksha - Head of the Department of Mass Communication - University of Kelaniya

Mass Communication or Media Studies and Journalism subjects are the most popular subjects in the education field. After introducing this subject to the university, this became most popular, because this is job oriented. That's why there is a big demand among the students in the university as well as the other educational institutions.

During the last decade there were several books published on this subject in Sinhala. Now the government is going to introduce Mass Communication to the advanced level. The needs of the books will increase, because the books in English medium are available, but Sinhala medium books are not sufficient.

Three books were published by Dr. Ajantha Hapuarachchi recently, who is attached to the Journalism Unit of the University of Colombo. The names of the books are Public Communication and Public Relations. Articles on Journalism, and Interviews. The last two books are published as Newspaper Journalism 1 and 2.

There are 11 chapters in the book, Public Communication and Public Relations. This book is the third book on this subject in Sri Lanka and it was dealt with areas which so far has not been discussed. The first chapter is the introduction to PR and the others are 'Patterns of Public Relations linked with oriental lifestyle', 'Origins and Evolution of Public Relations', 'Public Opinion', 'Definitions of PR', 'Ethics of PR', 'Careers in PR', 'Major areas where PR is practised', 'Models of PR', 'Types of PR'.

Models and new trends of PR is the most important chapters in this book. The public relations practitioners can use this book as a text book. On the other hand this is a practical aspect of PR. This book will help students as well as public relations officers. The publisher is Senarath Prakashana."

Articles on Journalism also contains 10 chapters. The first chapter is 'Introduction to Journalism and Journalist, then other chapters are as follows.

'Newspaper Ethics', 'Communication methodology and Pulitzer tradition', 'Peace Communication', 'History of obscene publication', 'The first investigative women reporter in the world', 'Styles of newspaper journalism', New communication theories and models', 'Origins and evolution of pop music.'

All the chapters are related to communication studies and journalism. This book too targets the students of Communication studies, the publisher is Rathna.

The book Interview entirely consists of practical knowledge for media personnel in interviewing or an art of interview for the media. This will help mostly the media practitioners. It explains the practical aspects in interviewing from the beginning to end.

This book will help a student or any person who is willing to be a journalist. The publisher is Wijesuriya Grantha Kendraya.

The author Dr. Ajantha says that she had collected new information on this subject and has used them in this book for the benefit of students in the university and the relevant fields.
