'Dawn of hope' for tsunami affected children

by Thava Sajitharan

The Tsunami Children Educational Trust (TCET) awarded sponsorships, 'Dawn of hope' to about 260 children affected by the Tsunami in an event held in Colombo under the patronage of Premier Mahinda Rajapakse last Thursday.

The selected children many of whom had lost either one of their parents or both by tsunami received the sponsorships. According to the organizers of the function, these children will receive US$10 every month from the TCET.

Donors from countries like Qatar, Dubai, UK and Iran have agreed to contribute for the cause.

A new website containing information on the activities of TCET was also launched during the occasion.

Speaking at the event the prime minister commended the efforts by the trust in extending helping hand to those affected. He also thanked the foreign countries who "rushed to help for the reconstruction of the battered areas."

"The anger waves of recent tsunami were followed by compassion" he said.

"We are happy, but not surprised".

Further remarking on initiatives taking place in the island to rebuild the destruction the prime minister said "these initiatives are well coordinated in some instances and less in others."

The president of the TCET Hafiz Naseer Ahamed in his speech expressed hope that the trust would be able to sponsor "no less than 5000 students before the end of this year".

He further assured to expand the commitment in order to bring back the enthusiasm of the children.
