Bright prospects for job seekers in Maldives

by Mahinda P. Liyanage, Maldives Corr.

Sri Lanka High Commissioner in the Republic of Maldives M.L. Mohamed Ali Farook in an exclusive interview for Sunday Observer revealed that the discussions he had with the Maldivian Minister of Education Dr. Mohamed Shauguee on the recruitment of more Sri Lankan teachers to serve in Maldives were quite successful and a more effective system would be introduced soon for the purpose through the Ministry of Labour Relations & Foreign Employment, in which respect, he had already informed Minister Athauda Senevirathne.

According to the Maldivian Minister of Education, despite the great demand for Sri Lankan teachers, the decline in teacher recruitment to Maldives in the recent years is due to the absence of a proper system of selecting and sending teachers to Maldives; on the part of Sri Lanka. Minister Athauda Senevirathne would arrange to formulate a proper system in that regard without further delay; the High Commissioner further said.

Mr. Ali Farook who assumed duties as High Commissioner in Maldives on last April 18 emphasized that he would be dedicated to serve all expatriate Sri Lankans alike with no bias or affiliations. He further said that, remedying a long prevailed shortcoming, arrangements have already been made by the High Commission to maintain a complete and up-dated register of all Sri Lankans working in Maldives.

"I have already schemed out a new action plan to reactivate and revitalize all national, religious and social programmes organized by the High Commission. Soon after the assumption of my duties as High Commissioner here, I gave top priority and concern to organize the annual Poson Programme. I am very pleased that we could conclude the Poson programme very successfully with the participation of a large gathering of Sri Lankans here.

Making deliberations on a news item published in a Sri Lankan Sinhala daily (not a Lake House Publication), Mr. Farook reiterated that there had been no interruption to Buddhist religious activities organized by the High Commission and the official who was in-charge of Welfare activities carried out by the High Commission had to return to Sri Lanka on official requirements, even serving an extended period of 6 months after his contract period of service ended on September 17,2004.

The High Commissioner also disclosed that he had made arrangements for a visit of Mr. Athauda Senevirathne the Minister of Labour Relations & Foreign Employment to Maldives in which the Minister would meet all Sri Lankans here providing opportunity for all to air their grievances.
