Fingara Academy to give cricket a pep-up

by Lal Gunasekera

The Fingara International Cricket Academy in old Kesbewa Road Nugegoda which was launched last week is fully equipped with modern technology with the latest indoor facilities and provides the opportunity for cricketers to specialise their skills with advanced coaches provided by the Academy.

Mervyn Jayasinghe, Deputy Chairman of F & G Group of the Ceylinco Group of Companies, said that the Fingara International Cricket Academy has turned a new leaf in the sport of cricket and one fact that influenced him greatly in putting up such an Academy was because of cricketers being starved of facilities at practices.

Former Sri Lanka cricketer and professional in Holland, Tony Opatha, who has returned to serve his motherland, is one of the masterminds of this project with the blessings of the Chairman of Ceylinco Group, Dr. Lalith Kotelawala. Opatha functions as the Executive Director in charge of this Academy.

The Fingara International Cricket Academy have engaged some top personnel in the calibre of former Sri Lanka stumper Hemantha Devapriya as Head coach, Lanthra Fernando and Nishantha Hennayake, and have gone further by engaging overseas coaches with experience such as John Dyson_the former Sri Lanka coach from Australia for one month and another former Australian cricketer, Trevor Chappell, who is also no stranger to Sri Lanka, for a period of three months.

The FICA are also in touch with coaches like Geoff Lawsan, Len Pascoe, Dean Jones and Doug Walters, and in addition, have made plans to engage consultant coaches in the calibre of Anura Tennekoon (a former Sri Lanka captain and CEO of SLC), Hashan Tillekeratne (another former Sri Lanka captain presently Executive Director of Cricket-Aid), Amal Silva, Oshadi Weerasinghe, Roger Wijesuriya, Asoka de Silva and Anusha Samaranayake.

The FICA will have the latest Quintic software where cricketers will gain tremendous advantages of improving their techniques and preventing injuries. The FICA has five indoor nets of quality artificial grass which could vary for pace, spin and bounce and assembled by a crew of professional Australians who arrived in the country last week.
