CWC to empower women

Tamil Press by Thava Sajitharan

Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission has urged both the Government and the LTTE to prevent the Cease-Fire Agreement (CFA) from running out of track as the situation in the East was deteriorating. SLMM delivered this request following the recent killing of a constable in front of the Kalkuda police station. (Thinakural(TK) - 04/07/05)

"Non-cooperation is the only alternative solution that the Muslim community has at present. This non-cooperation ought to be such that those who support the enslaving P-TOMS and thus regard the community's aspirations for emancipation as nothing for themselves would fear to do so", said the leader of Sri Lanka Muslim Congress Rauff Hakeem in an awareness meeting against the P-TOMS held in Sammanthurai last Wednesday. (Virakesari(VK) - 04/07/05)

A consensus was reached at the women's summit of Ceylon Workers' Congress held in Badulla last week to make changes in the charter in order to ensure at least 35% of female representation in all levels of the organisation including the leadership. (TK - 04/07/05)

'The Black Tigers' day' of the LTTE is commemorated today in all areas of the Tamil homeland. Several rejuvenating programs have been arranged to mark the event in all 8 districts in the North and East. (Sudaroli(SOI) - 05/07/05)

The fisher associations in Kurunagar (Jaffna) have jointly made a complaint to the Human Rights Commission to remove the Army camp situated at the port off the area.

This complaint was made following the death of their fellow fisher who got caught in the electric fences of the camp and died on his way to return home after fishing on last Saturday morning. The associations have requested to remove the camp so that they could work without such risk and danger. (VK - 06/07/05)

Several international community representatives have insisted Sri Lanka Muslim Congress leader Rauff Hakeem to provide support to the P-TOMS. They have met Mr. Hakeem the last few days.

They've been stressing him to reconsider SLMC's decision to reject the proposals. (SOI - 08/07/05)

Human Rights Commission circles said that the forces had refused to both remove the camps in Kurunagar and to change the security procedures over the crisis that arose after a fisher died falling on the electric fences of the army camp in the area. (VK -09/07/05)

The Ceylon Workers' Congress, one of few important parties remaining in the government's alliance, too have decided to betray the government. The CWC has become wrathful that the government had betrayed them over the upper Kotmale project issue.

The senior vice president and the Colombo district organiser of CWC R. Yogarajan told 'Sudaroli' yesterday that a decisive meeting would be held tomorrow headed by Arumugan Thondaman in Bandarawela to take a firm decision on the issue. (SOI - 09/07/05)
