Rupavahini telecasts matches against windies and triangular

by Ranjan Anandappa

The two - Test series between Sri Lanka and the West Indies and the Triangular limited overs matches between Sri Lanka, West Indies and India will be telecast live on Rupavahini's channel 'eye'.

Chairman Rupavahini Corporation M. Zuhair said that the Test series between Sri Lanka and the West Indies and the triangular One-day limited overs series between Sri Lanka, India, and West Indies was a much awaited event and an expert team of Sinhala commentators would analyse the match situation prior to the commencement of the game and during intervals each day. They have also made arrangements to telecast the highlights of both the Test series on the same day, and the ODI series on the following day.

The rights for the coverage were obtained through a tender system and both the SLRC and SLC were reluctant to disclose the amount.

The Director General of SLRC Nishantha Ranatunga said that SLRC has televised matches during the past few years, and the first Test between the West Indies and Sri Lanka played from July 13 to 17th at the SSC happens to be the 150th Test match since the country played their first official Test match in 1982 against England at the P.Sara Stadium. He also stressed on the necessity of taking cricket through televsion to the rural areas.

Tryphone Mirando, the secretary of the Interim Committee (SLC) thanked the SLRC for joining Sri Lanka Cricket and hoped the association between the two institutions would go on for many years. He said that although the Windies, not at full strength, the Chief Executive of SLC Dulip Mendis is negotiating with the WI Cricket Board to get their three star players Brian Lara, Sarwan and Chris Gayle to play in the series.

The president of the Interim Committee of Sri Lanka Cricket Jayantha Dharmadasa was also present at the press conference held at Hotel Taj Samudra with regard to the handing over television rights to the SLRC.
