Sathosa Retail employees begin fast

The employees of Sathosa Retail Ltd (SRL) have started a continuous fast as the government has not taken action to take over SRL and ensure continuity of employment.

"We informed Sathosa Chairman Mahinda Gammanpila that in the absence of a proper plan to take over SRL by the government and ensure continuity of employment by July 10 that we will resort to continuous trade union action, " a member of the Inter Company Employees Union SRL branch, said. We met the Chairman and the Minister of Trade, Commerce and Consumer Affairs Jeyaraj Fernandopulle on July 14 but since we did not get a proper answer we have decided on the fast.

We will continue until we get a clear answer from the minister together with dates of implementation of the action plan. When a delegation met the minister on June 29 he said that since there is no possibility to pay the salaries he will pay an allowance but the delegation said that it should be substantial.

According to sources the employees have not been paid their salaries for June. The management of Sathosa retail Ltd sold the remaining stock at the 143 retail outlets at 50% less to foot the Rs 28 million salary bill for May. In one of our earlier reports about SRL we highlighted this situation. The final report of the 10 - member committee on the possible take over of Sathosa Retail Ltd (SRL) was handed over to the Minister on June 16.

The Minister said that after studying the recommendations of the committee it would be forwarded for cabinet approval.

The comittee was appointed in April 2004 by the minister to look into the possibility of taking over SRL.

All four directors of International Grocers Alliance(IGA), the company which took over the management of Sathosa Retail Ltd (SRL) tendered their resignation to the Sathosa Chairman.

Pravir Samarasinghe, the member representing Arpico tendered his resignation to the Sathosa Chairman on May 26 followed by the other members of the board including Lakshman De Silva, Suresh Sha and Niranjan de Soyza.
