Lanka, China trade up 37% to $ 717 million

The fourth Annual General Meeting of the Sri Lanka - China Business Council (SLCBC), was held recently at the Holiday Inn Hotel under the patronage of Sun Guo Xiang, Ambassador of China and Patron of the Council.

Sun Guo Xiang highlighted some of the positive changes in bilateral trade. He said that the total volume of bilateral trade between China and Sri Lanka increased by 37% to 717 million US dollars compared to the previous year, and this is the highest record in history. In 2004, China contributed 12% to the increase of world trade in goods, and became the main driving force for global trade growth.

He said the Chinese government was successful in providing a grant of 150 million RMB Yuan, which is equivalent to Rs. 1,800 million and three batches of emergency relief goods as tsunami relief. The most noteworthy event, which took place this year, was the visit of Wen Jiabao, Premier of the State Council of the People's Republic of China to Sri Lanka.

This visit resulted in developing an all round cooperation partnership featuring mutual support and everlasting friendship.

He commended the SLCHBC and all its members for what they had done towards this end. He also applauded the council for successfully organising a seminar on "Doing Business with China", and the mission to Canton Fair in 2005.
