Undergrad appeals to Jaffna HRC against UGC

From Tamil Press by Thava Sajitharan

'If our Tamil speaking Muslim siblings have any problems or feelings of anxiety on anything including issues on P-TOMS, we are prepared to resolve them through negotiations with the Muslim leaders. They can amicably resolve the issues by discussing the matters with mutual understanding', said the LTTE political wing leader S. P. Thamilchelvan in a special interview with 'Sudar Oli' held day before yesterday. (Sudar Oli(SOI) - 11/07/05).

Ceylon Workers' Congress (CWC) took a decision to hold talks with the President in its committee meeting convened by Arumugan Thondaman in Bandarawela yesterday. The decision was taken following the news reports saying that the Government had decided to carry out activities in contrast to the alternative plans pertaining to the Upper Kotmale Project submitted by the CWC and had issued tender notices for that. (Virakesari(VK) - 11/07/05).

A massive demonstration is to be held in Mannar on July 19 to protest the Sethusamudram Project and the adverse effects it could bring about on the fisherfolk of the North Province and to condemn the constraints imposed by the forces on the fisherfolk of the area. Mannar Fishers' Cooperative Society has organised the demonstration. (Thinakural(TK) - 12/07/05).

The Government has assured to take necessary actions regarding the Upper Kotmale tender notices accepting the dissatisfaction expressed by the CWC over the issue. Important talks were held between the CWC representatives and Power and Energy Minister Susil Premajayanth regarding the matter. (SOI - 13/07/05).

The Eastern University students held a demonstration yesterday condemning the killing of LTTE members in Trincomalee and demanding the implementation of P-TOMS. (TK - 13/07/05).

The Tamil National Alliance MPs will meet with the LTTE political wing leader S. P. Thamilchelvan on July 17 to discuss matters on the killings of the LTTE members in the East and the increasing crisis over LTTE members travelling in the government controlled areas. (TK - 13/07/05).

An affected Sri Lankan student who was instructed by the Universities Grants Commission (UGC) through a letter to pay US$ 3,000 per annum to continue his studies at the Peradeniya University's Agriculture Faculty has made a complaint at the Jaffna Human Rights Commission.

J. Jenatsan off Neduntheevu migrated to India due to the conflict in the country and resided at a welfare centre over there. He followed his education with the help of few voluntary organisations and obtained good results.

However, as the High Court of India ruled out that a Sri Lankan student cannot receive free education in India and he could not continue his education in India. Having returned to Sri Lanka, he applied to the UGC seeking an admission in a Sri Lankan University. The UGC accepted his application and asked him to study as a foreign student. (VK - 15/07/05).

It is learnt that, Norway is redoubling its efforts in analysing means to avoid the current situation from aggravating as the ties between the Sri Lankan Government and the LTTE are worsening. (SOI - 15/07/05).
