Youth parliament : Reaching new heights "Create a cohesive Sri Lanka" is the theme of the first ever youth Parliament in Sri Lanka. It's seldom that youth get to voice their opinion in parliament where agendas are set, strategies are developed and action is planned. SLYP is an attempt at reclaiming the space where the importance of youth as action partners and decision makers in the nation is reflected. Thus the concept of training the average person to be leaders of tomorrow, was put to action in October 2004. Sri Lanka Youth Parliament (SLYP) 2005 permits participants to critically analyse issues leading to action for a peaceful, equitable and sustainable Sri Lanka. The 225 participants represent all social backgrounds and will get together to develop policies, gain new skills and implement action plans to make a difference across the country. SLYP 2005 is an action based forum which is facilitated by the Bandaranaike Centre for International studies. Applicants are expected to be the youth between the ages 16-25 from all parts of Sri Lanka and from all ethnic and religious groups. The participants are rejoined to demonstrate passion for social justice, possess experience as a young social activist or community leader and equipped with skills in identifying and analyzing issues or opportunities for positive change in the society. The programme will be conducted in English with simultaneous translations in Sinhalese and Tamil. The legislative body will meet at a forum which will be held from August 3-7 at the BMICH where they'll come up with action plans to make a difference in their community, varying from building a bridge to women's rights and agriculture. The implementation stage is the most important thing where the youth leaders will go back to their communities to put their plans into action. SLYP is an attempt at achieving sustainable peace emphasising the needs of people who yearn for a better worthy, better living conditions and better participation in governance and decision-making. |
