Unseen hand behind Trinco violence by our political correspondent On receipt of intelligence reports concerning the possible subversive involvement of a leading political party in the South, in the recent disturbances taking place in Trincomalee, the Government has initiated a full probe into the entire range of incidents in the area during the last few weeks. As a result certain personnel changes have also been made in the police and security forces establishments in the area. Intelligence services suspect that the objective of the forces behind the unrest in Trincomalee is to escalate the violence to a full scale armed confrontation between the security forces and the LTTE. Attempts are also made by certain political forces to involve lower ranking elements of the armed forces too in these subversive activities, it is learnt. Due to the contemporaneous nature of these incidents with the signing of the P-TOMS and the government's readiness to revitalise the peace process investigators will also probe whether certain elements among the wider opposition to the P-TOMS are also involved in these subversive acts. Intelligence analysts say that certain attacks that had taken place recently display characteristics normally not associated with LTTE attacks. They are of the opinion that LTTE attacks have been normally targeted at groups of persons or objects in contrast to the dispersed grenade attacks from treetops and travelling buses that were witnessed in Trincomalee recently. The Government, however, commends the actions taken by the Security forces to quell the disturbances and expresses full confidence in the three service Commanders, IGP and the corpus of service personnel and policemen. The President has been in constant consultation with the Security Council during the last few days and has instructed the service chiefs to be firm against any saboteurs. She has also stressed the need to seek solutions through dialogue and consultation to the issues that have cropped up. |
