FM raps Excise officers The Commissioner General of the Excise Department Parakrama Ekanayake has to submit a report daily to Finance Minister Dr. Sarath Amunugama on the raids of Night Clubs carried out by his department. These instructions were given by the Minister at a meeting held on Thursday to discuss the increase in children taking drugs and liquor. The meeting was attended by Crime Investigation DIG S. N. Wickremasinghe and Customs Director General Sarath Jayatilleke. The Minister said that the Excise Department was responsible for 90 percent of the mess in the country. Some of the offences committed by Night clubs include operating without liquor licences, providing liquor to minors and keeping the bars open after recommended hours. Therefore continuous raids are necessary to stop these offences which lead to serious crimes in the country. The Minister also requested the Excise Department to devise a method to tax the illegal liquor "Kasippu" manufacturers. This will earn a huge amount of revenue for the government. He also requested the Police and the Customs Department to come up with a plan to catch the drug dealers. All law enforcement agencies have to work together to protect the younger generation of the country. It is a duty of everybody, said the Minister. (SG) |
