Tsunami reconstruction progressing well by Anura Maitipe The rehabilitation program launched by the government at a cost of USD 3484.3 billion to reconstruct tsunami affected areas are in progress, Finance Ministry sources told the Sunday Observer. The government has planned to complete this project in three stages.It had allocated USD 270.35 million at the first stage to provide quick relief assistance for affected families. And these funds have been utilised to provide temporary shelters, monthly rations and quick finance assistance, fishing boats and equipment for affected families, sources said. The second stage has already been implemented with an allocation of USD 1688.25 million to reconstruct 42 schools, 62 large, medium and small towns, 31,456 houses, 25 anchor bases and 11 fishing harbours, sources added. Most anchorages and fishing harbours have already been reconstructed. Town planning, construction of houses and schools are in progress. The needed for land for relocation of towns have been allocated, sources noted. Under the final stage USD 1525 million will be utilised by the government to rehabilitate, railway track, road net work, telecommunication facilities, electricity, water supply, sanitation and coastal conservation in the affected areas including North and East, he added. |
