Opening of David Weatheral building at Medical Faculty: Kelaniya University The Molecular Medicine Unit (MMU) at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya was established in March 2002, for furthering molecular studies on major infectious and vector-borne diseases, and for the provision of DNA based parentage and forensic testing in Sri Lanka. Currently, the unit offers molecular diagnostic services for malaria, dengue and hepatitis B & C infections and functions as the only government institution which acts as the national centre for DNA typing for human identification and forensic case work. A new building to house the Molecular Medicine Unit was opened recently. It was the dream that was shared by Prof. Janaka de Silva, Dean of the Faculty, all the members of the Unit and all other members of the Faculty Board. Kelaniya Medical School Alumni Association played a major role in making this new building project a success by handling funds and undertaking other administrative responsibilities. A unique feature of this new (7500 sq.ft) building project was that all funds for construction were from wellwishers. In order to achieve this target the MMU has already established collaborative links with the Institute for Tropical Medicine, Nagasaki University - Japan, Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine - Liverpool UK, National University of Singapore, University of Hong Kong - Hong Kong. The MMU is well equipped and has all the infrastructure facilities to carry out molecular research. Presently all the activities of MMU is directed and guided by its dedicated staff members headed by Dr. W. Abeyewickreme, two senior lecturers, Doctors Aresha Manamperi, Nilmini Gunawardene and Menaka Hapugoda (Presently a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the ICGEB, New Delhi, India) Dr. Chanditha Hapuarachchi (affiliated lecturer who is reading for his Ph.D. degree), all of which are qualified molecular biologists/researchers with excellent academic and professional records. Furthermore, the MMU has well trained technical staff members K. B. A. T. Bandara, Chandani Wellawatta and M. Y. D. Dayanath. |
