Davis Cup : Lanka's winning streak ends by Lal Gunesekera Sri Lanka after two fine wins over the bottom seeds Qatar (3-0) and Bahrain (3-0) were beaten by Vietnam (1-2) in the bottom half of the draw of Davis Cup (Asia / Oceania Zone Group 111) now in progress in Hong Kong's Victoria Park Tennis Complex, Causeway Bay. On Wednesday, Sri Lanka, brushed aside quatar with 19-year-old Harshana Godamanne and the country's No.1 Singles player Renouk Wijemanne winning their two Singles matches. The former beat Sultan Khalfan 6-2, 6-1 in about 35 minutes, while the latter beat Mohamed Abdullah also in straight sets (6-4, 6-0). Godamanne then partnered 17-year-old Oshada Wijemanne to win the Doubles too over Abdullah and Haijji in straight sets (6-1, 6-1). The following day (Thursday), Sri Lanka, continuing their winning streak beat Bahrain 3-0. Once again, Godamanne and Wijemanne won their Singles matches over Abdul Rahman Shehab (6-1, 6-4) and Khaled Al-Thawadi (6-2, 6-4). For the Doubles, Sri Lanka, Godamanne was 'rested' with Rajiv Rajapakse partnering Oshada Wijemanne. This combination too triumphed over the Qatari pair 7-5, 6-4 in quite an interesting tussle. However, Sri Lanka were halted on their winning streak by Bahrain who won 2-1 on Friday. Godamanne again was the only Lankan to win his Singles over Quang Huy Ngo (4-6, 6-3, 6-3). Wijemanne lost his Singles to Minh Quan Do (4-6, 4-6), while Godamanne and Wijemanne losing the Doubles to Minh Quan Do and Quoc Khan (3-6, 1-6). The Lankans have now completed their matches in the bottom half, and though losing to Vietnam, have assured themselves of continuing to play in group 111 again next year (2006). |
