Sri Lanka's games against Kazakhastan in October and November

Sri Lanka's 'home and away' matches against Kazakhastan in the Rugby World Cup (Asia qualifying) third-round will be on October 29 or 30 in Almati and on November 12 at Longden Place.

Earlier in the first-round games played last year (2004). Sri Lanka, beat both India 54-17 at Bombay and Thailand 35-14 at Longden Place, while in the second-round games earlier this year, the Lankans beat Thailand for the second time 48-38 at Suphanburi and Singapore 34-17 at Longden Place last month (June).

The Secretary of the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union (SLRFU), Dilroy Fernando, further told the Sunday Observer that additions to the national pool will be made after the second-round games of the current Caltex League Championship and that training too will commence under George Simpkin the New Zealander and C. P. Abeygunawardene.

Fernando also confirmed that the Asian Qualifying final of the Rugby World Cup likely to be again between Japan and South Korea too will be staged in Colombo along with the 20th Asiad scheduled to be worked off from November 20 to 25 next year (2006).

The Asiad in Colombo is likely to see 17 sides battling it out, but they have time till May next year (2006) to confirm their participation.

They are - Japan, South Korea, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, China, Arabian Gulf, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Thailand, Guam, Kazakhastan, India, Pakistan, Vietnam, Krygistan, Philippines and Kampuchea.

He also said that Hemaka Amarasuriya (Chairman of Singer) has been appointed to head a sub committee to organise the Asiad which also includes three former SLRFU chiefs in Malik Samarawickreme, Y. C. Chang and Gamini Fernando, while the rest comprises the present President of SLRFU, Priyantha Ekanayake, Dilroy Fernando (Secretary), Michael Jayasekera (Deputy President, SLRFU), Shantha Kurumbulapitiya (Treasurer) and SLRFU Council member Ranjan Canagasabai.

Meanwhile, the Junior (Under-19) Asiad is to be staged in December at Lahore, Pakistan and a Council meeting of the Asian Rugby Football Union (ARFU) too is to be held in Lahore during this period.
