Non-violent hunting

by Thileni Wickramaratne

Nilantha Anurudda Michael is a non-violent hunter. He hunts with his camera. In an interview with the Sunday Observer he reveals what makes him click.

Nilantha is a commercial photographer by profession, but his passion is capturing nature scenes. Nilantha says that as a hobby he adopts bird watching and also studies wildlife. The keen-eyed photographer started off his profession in 1996 at the Sri Lanka Art of Photographic Society and since then he has been clicking his camera. Up to now Nilantha has a winning collection of more than 2000 nature photos.

"Phenomenature", carrying the theme nature, will be Nilantha's first exhibition featuring some 70 - 80 nature photographs depicting the picturesque endemic wildlife of Sri Lanka. The photographer said that the exhibition was a result of three years' hard work of travelling to nature spots like Sinharaja, Knuckles, Yala, Udawalawe and Athwelthota and clicking his camera on wildlife.

The significant feature of the exhibition is that it will stage photographs of rare insects and lizards that are not often captured by nor sought after by Sri Lankan photographers. There will also be an array of pictures on plants, landscaping, reptiles, birds and mammals.

The exhibition will be held at the Harold Pieris Gallery, Lionel Wendt from August 6-8. The exhibition will commence at 10.30 a.m. Professor Sarath Kotagama, of the University of Colombo, Head of the Dept. of Zoology of the University of Colombo, will be the chief guest at the occasion.

Nilantha invites all amateur photographers and nature lovers to be present to view his focus on nature.
