Whilst remaining as a free issue distributed by the Sunday Observer, the Junior Observer will from now on stand out on its own as a separate entity.

Registered as the first English newspaper for children in Sri Lanka, the School Edition of the Junior Observer will be available for subscription at a special price for schools from August 7, 2005.

At a ceremony held on August 5 at Galle Face Hotel, Colombo to launch' the school edition, Chief Guest, Mrs. Pushpa Jayakody, Chief of Learning Years and Adolescent's Programs, UNICEF, Sri Lanka appreciated the efforts taken by ANCL for promoting English education among children. Noting how the Junior Observer displayed the writing abilities of students Mrs. Jayakody stressed the importance of English in today's society.

Dhammika Athukorala, a Teacher of English from Medamulla de Mel Vidyalaya, Melsiripura, in his speech described how popular the Junior Observer had become among his students and how he had suggested the Principal of his school that they should buy more copies of only the Junior Observer as they can't afford to buy the entire Sunday Observer. Thus was conceived the school edition which is priced at Rs. 8.00 per copy.

Emphasizing the fact that our mother tongue should never be underestimated Prof. Gamini Keerawella, Director Editorial, in his speech noted the fact that a milestone has been reached in the history of the Sunday Observer.

He stressed that through the Junior Observer two important facts (i.e. the importance of addressing the requirements of the children and the importance of learning English) could be fulfilled.

Prof. Sunanda Mahendra too in his speech emphasized the important role a newspaper priced at such a special rate could play in cultivating the reading habit in schoolchildren.
